Dear Fr. James Oyet Lantasio
RE: MEETING OF THE ECUMENICAL NETWORK SOUTH SUDAN – AFRICA HUB
Peace be unto you from our Lord Jesus-Christ.
The Ecumenical Network on South Sudan – the Africa Hub, met for its quarterly meeting on 3 May 2017, in Nairobi, Kenya. The meeting was convened by the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC), the first after the Assembly held in October 2016.
A number of organizations were represented, namely the World Council of Churches (WCC), the Fellowship of Christian Councils and Churches in the Great Lakes and Horn of Africa (FECCLAHA), the Council of Anglican Provinces in Africa (CAPA), Norwegian Church Aid (NCA), Church of Sweden, Swedish Pentecostal Mission (PMU), CARITAS Australia and the AACC.
Bishop Dr. Isaiah Majok Dau, a member of the Board of Trustees of the South Sudan Council of Churches, represented the Council and the meeting was most grateful to him for accepting to travel purposely to Nairobi to join the Africa Hub.
This was an opportunity for the participants to have an update on the current situation in South Sudan and to share what the various organizations have done since the last Assembly and finally set priorities for the Africa Hub.
The meeting resolved:
- Continue with the Regional Advocacy, under the leadership of CAPA and the SSCC, including ecumenical visits to refugee camps in the sub-region.
- Organize a special day of prayer, which would precede the Independence Day of 9 July, with parallel activities also held in Nairobi and Kampala.
- Hold the celebration of the International Day of Peace Symposium of 21st September in Juba. A call will be made to other hubs to join the Africa Hub in Juba.
The meeting further encouraged the various organizations to continue with trauma healing and capacity building plans for both South Sudanese women and youth, inside and outside South Sudan.
Members also strongly recommended the South Sudan Council of Churches to have a youth desk, so that youth special problems can be handled by one of their peers.
In conclusion, the Africa Hub members affirmed their commitment to continue collaborating and accompanying the SSCC in all efforts that will bring sustainable peace for the South Sudanese.
We are hereby attaching the list of participants for information and further reference.
For the Africa Hub, the Convener,
Rev. Prof. Bosela Eale
