AACC Champions for Education and Human Rights Advocacy at The ACHPR Forum

The All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) actively engaged in the NGO Forum preceding the 81st Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), which was held in Banjul, The Gambia, from October 13 to 15, 2024. The forum united over 150 African NGO representatives to emphasize a collective commitment to addressing pressing human rights issues.

The theme, “Educate an African Fit for the 21st Century: Building Resilient Education Systems for Increased Access to Inclusive, Lifelong, Quality, and Relevant Learning in Africa,” set the scene for vibrant discussions. The AACC, renowned for its dedication to democracy and human rights, played a crucial role in these conversations, aiming to enhance collaboration between NGOs, the African Commission, and other human rights mechanisms to foster a more inclusive and resilient educational landscape.

Rev. Angele Dogbe, Director of the Lome Regional office, significantly contributed to the discussion on the migration crisis on the continent. She highlighted the urgent need to address the root causes of irregular migration, human trafficking, and modern-day slavery.  “Creating awareness and providing psychological support for survivors is crucial we also need comprehensive migration policies that protect the dignity and rights of migrants, particularly young Africans, risking their lives,” She said

Brian Tinashe Katsidzira, a member of the All Africa Youth Network and a prominent voice in social justice and youth empowerment from Zimbabwe, spotlighted the economic challenges facing African youth, particularly unemployment and poverty. “We need targeted investments in high labor sectors such as Agriculture, Manufacturing, and skills development. This will help in prioritizing youth employment and alleviate poverty,” Said Tinashe

The forum also addressed the need for education systems in conflict-affected areas, safeguarding educational institutions and ensuring continuous learning opportunities for children and youth. Discussions on elections and democratic processes emphasized the importance of free and fair elections in promoting political stability, proposing solutions for conducting elections in conflict-prone regions, human rights violations impacting education, and advocating for stronger protections and support systems for students and educators.

The AACC plans to continue its advocacy work, focusing on implementing the strategies discussed at the forum to build more resilient and inclusive education systems across the continent. The forum concluded with all participants' renewed sense of purpose and commitment.
