AACC engages with the Pre-Tana Women Peace and Security Regional Stakeholders’ Dialogue in Zambia
Every year, the Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa brings together African leaders and stakeholders to engage and explore African-led security solutions. This year, the forum is scheduled for 25 - 27 October 2024 in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, and ahead of this, a Pre-Tana Regional Multi-stakeholders' Dialogue was held on 4th and 5th September 2024 in Lusaka, Zambia. The AACC was represented by Dr. Gorden Simango, the Director for AACC’s Liaison Office to the African Union & Advocacy.
The Lusaka Pre-Tana Regional Multi stakeholders’ dialogue noted that much as 60% of the conflicts in Africa have cross border spill overs, early warning systems on the continent do not reflect this cross-border dimension. The urgent need to bridge the gap between policy and practice with regards to the Women Peace and Security agenda, and to increase women’s participation in leadership, peacemaking and peacekeeping process was reiterated.
In his input in one of the panel discussions, Gorden drew from the findings of a research commissioned by the AACC on the “Assessment on Women’s Rights in Armed Conflict Affected Areas: The case of Women’s Housing, Land and Property Rights in Tigray region –Ethiopia” to challenge the consultation to begin unpacking overused concepts such as political will. To foster accountability in peacebuilding efforts, he encouraged the forum to mention stakeholders by name when calling them for action towards specific agendas.
