AACC’s General Secretary addresses the 19th Council Meeting of the Ethiopia Evangelical Church
“We pray for Peace in Ethiopia” AACC’s General Secretary addresses the 19th Council Meeting of the Ethiopia Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY).
The EECMY was one of the founding members of AACC in 1963 and also played a key role in the establishment of AACC’s liaison office to the African Union in Ethiopia. Its 19th Council meeting, taking place at the Mekane Yesus Seminary in Addis Ababa from 3rd to 7th October 2023, will discuss and pass decisions on a number of issues in the church and the country.
In his greetings to the council, the AACC General Secretary, Rev Dr. Fidon Mwombeki conveyed AACC’s prayers for peace in Ethiopia.
“We pray for the amicable resolution of the tension between Ethiopia and Egypt on the water question. We pray that each country´s needs and rights be respected and honored without being tied to a colonial treaty which in many ways is simply unreasonable.”
Rev Dr. Fidon revealed the conference’s disappointment in the fact that Ethiopia, a country that united and resisted colonial leadership, now fights with itself, based on ethnicity.
“I always say that ethnicity is a curse in African politics in almost all African countries. It is so sad that even the unity of the Christian faith gets a back seat when ethnicity rises. I pray that the ethnic-based conflicts are totally eliminated in Ethiopia and other countries of Africa.”
He called upon church leaders to resolve injustices based on nepotism, favoritism, and unwise sharing of power and wealth among ethnic groups. he encouraged the church to continue propagating the gospel and wished Ethiopia would continue to prosper economically.
Among the key things that the churches in Africa pray for Ethiopia as noted by the General Secretary include mitigating the effects of climate change, the creation of sustainable families with manageable sizes, and economic growth. He concluded by affirming that the AACC was looking forward to its 12th General Assembly with hope and excitement.
“We will gather and reason together, under the theme: The Love of Christ Compels Us.” I definitely hope to see EECMY in its strength there as well.”
