African Churches Commit to Fight Antimicrobial Resistance and Launch Key Faith-Based Health Tools

On 5 May 2026, faith leaders from across Africa made a historic commitment to address Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), one of the most urgent and under-recognized public health threats facing communities today. This was during a continental Faith Leaders Webinar on Health and Healing convened by the Africa Christian Health Association Platform (ACHAP), Ecumenical Pharmaceutical Network (EPN), and ReACT Africa in collaboration with the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC).

The webinar brought together church leaders, health practitioners, and ecumenical partners to explore the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance and the unique role of faith communities in promoting healthier and more responsible practices. Participants reflected on how churches can use their moral influence, community reach, and theological voice to contribute to public awareness, prevention, and stewardship efforts.

A major outcome of the engagement was the official launch of two strategic resources for faith communities: the AMR Sermon Guide and the AMR Policy Brief. Developed to strengthen the Church’s response to the growing threat of drug resistance, the resources are designed to help faith leaders translate scientific and public health information into practical, faith-rooted action.
The AMR Sermon Guide offers structured sermons and theological reflections that connect Christian teaching with health stewardship and responsible antimicrobial use. The accompanying Policy Brief provides evidence-informed guidance for church-led programming, advocacy, and engagement on AMR at local, national, and continental levels. Both resources were launched for adoption and use across denominations and church networks in Africa.

In his keynote address, the AACC General Secretary emphasized that churches remain among the most trusted institutions for shaping public attitudes and influencing community behaviour.

“We must swing into action to promote responsible use of antibiotics and challenge harmful practices that fuel resistance,” he stated.

He further encouraged churches to integrate AMR awareness into sermons, Bible studies, youth ministries, health ministries, and community outreach initiatives as a practical expression of the Church’s healing ministry.

As a defining moment of the webinar, participants adopted the AACC Faith Leaders’ Statement of Commitment on the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Agenda. The statement captured a shared commitment by faith leaders across the continent to champion awareness creation, promote responsible antimicrobial use, strengthen community education, support evidence-based advocacy, and contribute to national and continental efforts to curb antimicrobial resistance.

Building on this momentum, the AACC Executive Committee meeting held in Lomé, Togo on 27 May 2026 formally endorsed the AACC Faith Leaders’ Statement of Commitment on the AMR Agenda. The endorsement transformed the declaration from a webinar outcome into an official institutional commitment of the AACC fellowship and affirmed the Council’s intention to accompany member churches in advancing faith-based health action across Africa.
