CCSL Marks 100 Years with Triennial Assembly, Elects New Leadership to Guide Future Mission

The Council of Churches in Sierra Leone (CCSL) has successfully concluded its Ninth Triennial Assembly, where new leaders were elected and inducted to oversee its activities for the next three years. This year's Assembly coincided with CCSL’s centennial celebration, providing a moment to reflect on the council's achievements, challenges, and a renewed commitment to serving  the church and the wider community.

The gathering was a joyful occasion, attended by various ecumenical bodies and government representatives, recognizing CCSL's impactful journey in Sierra Leone. Speaking on the theme, "Celebrating our Past, Committing to the Present, and Inspiring a Hopeful Future," Hon. Justice Nicholas Browne-Marke, Acting Chief Justice of Sierra Leone and Chancellor of the Anglican Diocese of Freetown emphasized the importance of the church in upholding Christian values and supporting the growth of the faith.

Mrs. Keziah Kargbo, General Secretary of CCSL, highlighted the centenary as a milestone for the church’s ongoing mission to proclaim the gospel, promote justice, and serve the people of Sierra Leone. She reaffirmed CCSL’s commitment to preserving the vision and legacy of its founders—“that they may all be one.”

Key topics discussed during the Assembly included climate justice, peacebuilding, women and youth empowerment, and campaigns against harmful traditional practices.
The newly elected leadership of CCSL includes:
- President: Rev. Henry A. Samuels
- 1st Vice President: Bishop John M. Pessima
- 2nd Vice President: Mrs. Sento Conteh
- Treasurer: Mr. Christian M. Kamara
- Ex-officio: Bishop Magnus Bendu

The celebrations culminated in a Thanksgiving Service at St. George’s Cathedral on Sunday, September 22. The preacher, Rev. Fidon Mwombeki, General Secretary of the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC), admonished worshippers using 1 Samuel 7:12. He emphasized that it has been God helping the CCSL for 100 years, assuring the congregation that God will continue to grant wisdom and guidance to the church. Rev. Mwombeki urged the church to guard against misleading theologies, fight against injustices, and reject vices that undermine human dignity.
