Continental Capacity Strengthening meeting on Eco-Justice ends with celebrating AFAN-CJ’s Growth and Impact
AACC’s Africa Faith Actors Network for Climate Justice (AFAN-CJ) was established in 2022 to champion Africa’s faith-based advocacy, activism and all actions for ecological and economic justice. The network’s capacity strengthening workshop held in Nairobi, Kenya from 29th to 31st July 2025 in Nairobi, Kenya ended with religious leaders renewing their commitment to the pursue eco-justice with boldness.
In her remarks, Ms. Azmaira Alibhai from the United Nation’s Environmental Programme’s Faith for Earth Initiative emphasized the role of faith actors in the protection of the earth. She affirmed that across continents, faith institutions have shaped people understanding of the world and exist as strategic architects for a sustainable future.
Participants reflected on the various local, regional and continental initiatives carried out by the AFAN-CJ members in pursuit for climate justice since 2020, and the significance of these initiatives in Africa and Globally. At the end of the workshop 35 religious leaders participating the AFAN-CJ’s work for the first time were inducted as new members of the network.
While celebrating their agency, the network welcomed a newly published resource book written by the AFAN-CJ Vice Chairperson, Sheikh Dr. Hassan Kinyua Omari entitled, ‘Environment in the Light of Quran and Sunnah.’
“This book was inspired by my participation in the All Africa Conference of Churches work on creation care and climate action through the AFAN-CJ.” Noted the Sheikh as he spoke to the content of his book.
