Fraternal Greetings from the AACC to the 60th Anniversary Celebrations of the Churches Commission for Migrants in Europe
The greetings were delivered by the AACC General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Fidon Mwombeki, on 3rd December 2024 during the anniversary celebrations in Frankfurt.
“I am delighted to be here because of the growing cordial partnership between AACC and CCME.” Said Dr. Fidon. “We appreciate CCME’s overall approach to migration issues which strives to ensure that people are treated with dignity as they are all created in the image of God. Human dignity is sacred and their rights as human beings are God given and must be protected more than countries protect their borders.” He continued.
Dr. Fidon affirmed that as the political atmosphere around the world is changing and turning against migration to perceive it the root cause of all problems in our different countries, the call for CCME, AACC and their members to not let that toxic rhetoric take root and overturn decades of development is vivid.
He highlighted that the AACC is working on the campaign for African patriotism under the theme Africa. My Home. My Future. aimed at encouraging young people to remain and prosper in Africa. In addition to this, he also acknowledged the fact that millions of young people have no hope to succeed in their countries and one cannot dissuade them from taking opportunities elsewhere. He, therefore, stressed the need to focus on the protection of the dignity and rights of all people above anything else.
Speaking to the challenge of irregular migration, the General Secretary called for a critical examination of the Bilateral Labor Agreements to ensure that they are not drivers of modern slavery.
“We must remember that slavery was legal and supported by numerous laws that were enforced despite it being brutal and unjust. We should therefore, not be fooled by signed agreements as if they are just and fair, or enforced in a just manner.” He stressed.
