Women Statement to AACC’s 12th General Assembly Stresses the Significance of Gender Equality to the Achievement of AU Agenda 2063
Prior to the General Assembly, the women delegates and participants met for their Pre-assembly on 17th and 18th November 2023 at St Matthias House, Abuja Nigeria. The theme of the pre-assembly: The Love of Christ Compels Us to Promote Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment (GEWE) in Africa" invited the participants into constructive dialogues on the role of African women in God’s mission and the Ecumenical Movement.
“Guided by Christ’s love, the Church is called to replicate Jesus’ egalitarian approach to women, empowering them so that they are a visible reflection of the Imago Dei (God’s image).” Reads the statement.
Much as the statement acknowledged the efforts made by the various churches to empower women and engage them in various leadership opportunities in the church, it expressed the delegates' concern about the low participation of women in church leadership reported from the results of the recent study carried out by the AACC.
The statement called upon the fellowship to ensure sustainability and continuity of the ongoing initiatives on GEWE such as the Justice for Widows campaign, the Male Champions initiative, engaging the Boy Child and increasing the platforms for male champions throughout the continent.
