AACC Leading the Charge at COP 29 for a Sustainable Future

The All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) is set to participate in COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024, through the Africa Faith Actors Network for Climate Justice (AFAN-CJ). Representing AACC, a high-powered delegation that includes faith leaders from Christian and Muslim communities, youths, and women will attend.

AACC General Secretary Rev. Dr. Fidon Mwombeki kicked off AACC's engagement by participating in the pre-COP Global Summit of Religious Leaders on Green Planet. Hosted by the Government of Azerbaijan and under the patronage of President Ilham Aliyev, this summit gathered over 300 leaders from governments, international organizations, religious communities, scholars, and environmental experts. The event highlighted the critical role of faith in tackling environmental challenges and aimed to bolster collaboration among global religious leaders in combating climate change.

Building on the success of the 2023 summit in Abu Dhabi, the Baku gathering sought to reinforce partnerships and the commitment of religious organizations to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.

Dr. Tinashe Gumbo, AACC Programme Executive for Economic and Ecological Justice, emphasized the significance of COP29 for faith leaders engaging with global leaders on climate justice. He stated, "The COP29 is a strategic platform for AACC. As AFAN-CJ, we amplify the faith's voice on climate justice. Our members have been engaged in local processes, and we convened a continental round table in August to consolidate our position for COP29."

The AACC delegation will include eleven faith leaders, with two members participating as government representatives, highlighting the strong relationship between AACC and African governments. In collaboration with civil society and the global faith community, AACC will host several side events focusing on climate financing for locally led initiatives.
