Statement by the All Africa Conference of Churches to mark International Human Rights Day

Today, 10th December 2022 is International Human Rights Day. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All”. This is significant because respect and recognition of the inherent dignity and inalienable rights of every human being is the foundation of freedom, justice, and peace.

It is sad however to note the continuous violation of fundamental human rights and various forms of slavery across the world. The unjustified invasion of Ukraine by Russia and annexation of some of its states that has triggered untold hardship, misery and pain for people and families globally will continue to remain a scar on the conscience of the International Community. We are also aware of the many human rights violations in countries saddled with unending conflicts and unconstitutional change of governments. The right to life, freedom, free expression, health, and education eludes many people.

While acknowledging the work and progress made by the United Nations, the African Union, and Regional Bodies; the All Africa Conference of Churches urges these bodies to do more to promote and protect human dignity, respect, and fulfillment of human rights which is indispensable for peace, democracy, and sustainable development.

The respect for human dignity and God’s image in every human being must never be compromised.
