Churches in Nigeria are set to host AACC’s 60th Anniversary and 12th General Assembly

 

“The 12th General Assembly is not only a celebration but also a testament to the growth and cohesion of the Christian community in Africa since the idea of the AACC was conceived 64 years ago in Ibadan, Nigeria.” Noted the chairperson of AACC’s 12th General Assembly Local Planning Committee (LOC), H.E Rev Dr. Akanji Israel during a press conference held in Abuja on 14th September 2023,

The General Assembly is the largest policy and decision-making body of the All Africa Conference of Churches. The Assembly brings together African Ecumenists to worship together, evaluate the life and work of the churches in Africa, celebrate key milestones reached since the foundation of the Conference, and set the Agenda of Africa’s Ecumenical movement during the period leading to the next assembly. 

Since 1963, there have been 11 General Assemblies in the history of the AACC. Each assembly took place in a specific African country and ran on a specific theme prayerfully derived from the Bible and speaking to the aspirations and needs of the African Continent. The 12th General Assembly will take place on 18th - 23rd November 2023 at the National Christian Centre, in Abuja, Nigeria under the theme: “The Love of Christ Compels Us” derived from 2 Corinthians 5:14. Over 600 delegates from 43 African Countries are expected to participate in this assembly. These will be joined by other ecumenical leaders from all over the World. 

During his meeting with the LOC, AACC’s General Secretary, Rev Dr Fidon Mwombeki appraised the member churches in Nigeria for working together and offering their resources to afford the conference a memorable 60th Anniversary celebration and 12th General Assembly.  The meeting took place during the General Secretary’s visit to the Assembly grounds in Abuja, from 12th to 15th September 2023. The General Secretary was accompanied by Ms. Evelyne Okunda; the Executive Secretary to the General Secretary’s office and 12th General Assembly Coordinator. 

The LOC Chairperson revealed that the Assembly will strengthen the churches’ ongoing efforts in addressing the complex issues facing the African continent and the entire Globe. 

“Besides the 60th Anniversary, there are a number of other pre-assembly events that have been organized. These include the Theological Institute scheduled for 7th – 15th November 2023 at the Baptist Seminary, the Women pre-assembly scheduled for 17th – 18th at St. Matthias House and the Youth Pre-assembly scheduled for 16th – 18th November 2023 at the Methodist Church Cathedral,” reported Ms. Evelyne Okunda.  

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Daniel Okeh assured the LOC of CAN’s continued support throughout the preparations and this historical event.
