Africa Faith Actors Network on Climate Justice (AFAN-CJ) at COP 28
The 28th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties (COP28) will be held in Dubai, from 30 November to 12 December 2023. Through its Africa Faith Actors Network on Climate Justice (AFAN-CJ), the AACC will organize a series of sessions during COP28 in collaboration with other partners. The AFAN-CJ will consolidate its key findings accumulated during the various engagement processes in 2023 on climate issues. Through three of its representatives, the e AFAN-CJ will then join the official UNFCCC sessions including the side session organized by the AACC and its partners. The AACC, the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), and the Christian Aid will organize specific side events as shown below while the AFAN-CJ will also attend sessions organized by other partners.
The AFAN-CJ has continued to spearhead key national and continental processes on climate justice including participation at Africa Climate Week and other strategic spaces. Key messages have been developed and shared with national and African leaders. The just-ended Africa Climate Summit held in Kenya saw the AFAN-CJ producing a comprehensive and compelling call to action for African leaders towards COP28. Thus, the AFAN-CJ’s participation at COP28 will amplify the faith voices on climate justice issues that emanated from the previous key continental and global processes.
The three AFAN-CJ members will attend the COP28 in Dubai physically. They will participate in strategic official and informal sessions organized and coordinated by ecumenical partners as well as civil society organizations that the AACC has been collaborating with. The AACC and its partners will hold an official Side Event on 4 December 2023 which has already been approved by the UNFCC. The AACC delegation will also fulfill some bilateral engagement meetings with different partners who will attend the COP28. The AFAN-CJ position on climate change will inform the AACC engagement meetings.
