AACC Statement on the United Nations' Adoption of the “Correct the Map” Resolution

The All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) warmly welcomes and celebrates the adoption of the resolution entitled “Correct the Map: Rebalancing the World’s Cartographic Representation and Promoting the Equitable Representation of the Regions of the World, in particular Africa” by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly. We commend the Republic of Togo for its visionary and courageous leadership in bringing this initiative before the African Union and the international community, and we appreciate the solidarity and collective action of the African Union and the African Group in advancing this historic initiative.
The AACC recognizes in this resolution an important contribution by the UN to overcoming inherited patterns of misrepresentation and recovering a more truthful vision of Africa. This deeply resonates with the AACC’s “Africa: My Home. My Future” campaign, which mobilizes African youth to transform false and distorted narratives about the continent and champion its sustainable development into the Africa we want. The AACC, therefore, calls upon its member churches and ecumenical partners to champion the implementation of the “Correct the Map” resolution as they strengthen Pan-African and ecumenical solidarity around initiatives that affirm Africa’s agency and rightful place in global affairs.
As we celebrate this resolution, the AACC emphasizes that correcting cartographic representation is only one part of the broader work of justice. It must be accompanied by the deeper work of transforming the realities that continue to distort human dignity—including all forms of inequality and exploitation, conflicts, and systems that deny people the fullness of life that God desires for all. May this historic achievement inspire us to go beyond correcting maps to ensuring that equity, justice, and peace prevail in our shared world.
