AACC affirms the CCN in condemning the Yelewata Killings
Over the weekend of 13th/14th June 2025, a terrible massacre occurred in the Benue State of Nigeria, claiming the lives of 200 people. In their press release issued on 16 June 2025, the council of churches in Nigeria identified the incident as part of the orgy of killings going on in different parts of the western African country, especially in Benue and Plateau States.
Noting that these atrocities take place in the shadow of security check points, CCN president, Most Rev. Dr. David Onuoha expressed his disappointment in the inadequacy of the Government of the Republic of Nigeria.
“While we commiserate with the bereaved families and pray for the eternal repose of the souls of the victims, we believe that it is time for the government to come up with actionable time bound plans to end this national embarrassment. Fulfilling its primary responsibility of protecting the lives and property of the citizens is the best way to convince citizens that government has their interest and welfare at heart.” He wrote.
In the spirit of protecting the sacredness of life, human dignity and human rights, the AACC calls upon all duty bearers to do everything within their means to ensure that the perpetuators of these acts of violence are brought to book, ensure that these evils come to an end and facilitate healing for the people, families and communities affected.
We affirm and retaliate CCN’s call for “the government to immediately declare a state of emergency on insecurity in Benue, Plateau and indeed every other state in Nigeria, place a ban on campaigns for 2027 elections for at least the next six months during which every attention is focused on securing Nigeria and halting the wanton destruction of lives and property in the land.”
Remember, “The Lord examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, he hates with passion.” (Psalms 11:5, NIV).
