AACC General Secretary to observe the 38th Ordinary Session of the AU Heads of State Summit

Comprising of all the African Union Member States, the African Union Heads of States and Government Assembly is the AU’s supreme policy and decision-making organ. It determines the AU’s policies, establishes its priorities, adopts its annual programme and monitors the implementation of its policies and decisions. The 38th Ordinary session of this assembly will be held at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 15th and 16th February 2025 under the African Union theme of the year 2025 focusing on Reparatory Justice and Racial Healing: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations”.

Ahead of the summit, the AACC and partners: Christian Aid, Norwegian Church Aid, Church of Sweden, ACT Alliance, Zimbabwe Council of Churches, and the African Forum on Debt and Development held a successful pre-summit side event on “Reparatory Justice and Healing: A faith perspective” in Addis Ababa, from 12th to 13th February 2025. At this event, the Head of Diaspora Division in the AUC Citizens and Diaspora Directorate, Angela Naa Afoley Odai gave a goodwill message on behalf of the AU Commission, emphasizing the role of faith actors in reparatory justice and racial healing.

Following this side event, the AACC General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Fidon Mwombeki will be attending the High-Level Pre-Launch Event of the African Union Theme of the Year 2025 on Friday, 14 February 2025, at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, as one of the observers of the 38th Ordinary Session of the AU Heads of State Summit.

“As a key stakeholder in the reparations movement, your presence and participation will be instrumental in shaping the trajectory of the 2025 AU Theme of the Year, seeking to mobilize collective action and political will to advance reparatory justice and racial healing, address historical injustices and promote justice and equity for Africans and people of African descent worldwide.” Noted Salma El Tanany, the Ag. Director, Citizens and Diaspora Directorate (CIDO) in his letter to the AACC General Secretary.

“I am glad that AACC is recognized as an authentic representative of the voices of the churches in the Continent and I look forward to witnessing how the outcomes of our Pre-summit events on reparation justice will shape conversations at this Assembly.” Noted Rev. Dr. Fidon Mwombeki.
